Eight SUVs Rank Among Top 20 Most Stolen Vehicles

Several vehicles favored by fleets rank among the top 20 on the Highway Loss Data Institute’s (HLDI) list of most-stolen vehicles for model years 2020-2022. The HLDI report specifically examines whole-vehicle thefts as opposed to stolen contents from a vehicle or theft of vehicle parts.

The report indicates that thieves aim for expensive vehicles or those that boast high horsepower. There are also four Kia vehicles on this list, which HLDI believes is a result of a social media viral trend that has encouraged thieves to target the brand.

The top 20 list is comprised of vehicles with the highest relative claim frequencies for whole vehicle theft. There are SUVs, pickups, and passenger cars on the list — a number of which are popular fleet vehicles.

SUVs That Made the List

For example, eight SUVs made the list. The Land Rover Range Rover 4WD ranks fifth on the top 20 list with a relative claim frequency of 611. The Kia Sportage ranks sixth, with a relative claim frequency of 479.

That’s followed by the Land Rover Range Rover Sport 4WD (460), the Kia Sportage 4WD (415), the Honda CR-V 4WD (409), the BMW X6 4WD (361), and the BMW X7 4WD, which ranks fourteenth on the list with a claim frequency of 338.

Finally, a small SUV — the Honda CR-V — takes the twentieth spot on the overall list of most stolen vehicles with a relative claim frequency of 270.

Pickups fared better than SUVs, with just three very large pickups finding a place on HLDI’s top 20 list of most stolen vehicles. These include the Ford F-350 SuperCrew 4WD, with a relative claim frequency of 349, the Ford F-250 SuperCrew 4WD (337), and the Ram 3500 crew cab long-wheelbase 4WD (306).

While nine cars ranked among the top 20 most stolen vehicles, several are cars popular with consumers. However, fleet operators should note that the Dodge Challenger, Honda Accord, and Nissan Maxima are all on HLDI’s top 20 most stolen vehicle list.

Vehicle thefts continue to rise across America. Approximately one motor vehicle is stolen every 32 seconds, which translates to more than one million vehicles stolen in 2022, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
