WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) on Jan. 25 led a group of senators in introducing legislation aimed at expanding markets for biofuels. WASHINGTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Jan. 21 waived a limitation on selling gasoline that contains more than 10 percent ethanol for model year (MY) 2001 through 2006 passenger vehicles, including cars, SUVs and light pickup trucks. The waiver applies to fuel that contains up to 15-percent ethanol, known as E15.

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - A Purdue University economist has released two separate studies -- one on electricity costs for California electric vehicle owners, another on infrastructure requirements for the federal Renewable Fuel Standard. WASHINGTON - The Middle Class Tax Relief Act of 2010 (HR 4853), passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama on Dec. 17, includes extensions of two key incentives for natural gas vehicles. In addition, the law extends the ethanol tax credit through 2011, and retroactively extends the biodiesel tax incentive and the renewable diesel incentive through 2011.

GEISMAR, LA - Operations are underway at the new Dynamic Fuels plant, which converts animal fats and greases into renewable fuels, officials from Syntroleum Corp. and Tyson Foods Inc. said this week. Production began in early October and the plant's production volume is 2,500 barrels per day and growing.
