Gasoline – Fuel Efficiency

PSI Introduces New 8.8L Gas-Hybrid System

May 30, 2012

WOOD DALE, IL – Power Solutions International, Inc. (PSI) recently introduced its newly designed and engineered 8.8L Gas-Hybrid System, extending its engine line beyond Class 4 and 5 vehicles to Class 6 and 7 applications.

The system's technology relies on an electric motor to do most of the transient work so that engines consistently run in an efficient state. The elimination of transient torque enables applications such as refuse trucks and buses to downsize from larger engines to the more fuel-efficient 8.8L. The system's steady-state operation also reduces wear and tear, extending engine life, according to PSI.

PSI has integrated a120 kilowatt (kW) electric motor/generator to the engine to combine strong acceleration with improved fuel economy. As a result, applications with higher transient torque, such as refuse trucks, can see efficiency gains of up to 40 percent.

PSI can also custom design specific applications and integrate technologies and components to deliver complete drop-in systems.

Customers can choose any combination of power system components, including the integrated starter generator, controls and power electronics, energy and fuel storage or transmission.

The company also recently launched a new 8.8L "Big Block" engine at RVIA in Louisville, Ky. PSI showcased both products at the 2012 Alternative Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Long Beach, Calif.
