VW Settles Civil Claims for 3.0L Diesels

Volkswagen has agreed to pay $1.2 billion to buyers of vehicles powered by its 3.0L V-6 diesel engine that violated emissions regulations in a settlement that must receive a blessing from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and a federal judge.

Volkswagen has reached an agreement to settle claims relating to its 3.0L V-6 TDI engines with a commitment to buy back a quarter of the vehicles, set aside $225 million toward emissions reduction, and pay $25 million to support the use of zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) in California.

Volkswagen may not resume sales of diesel models in the U.S. and plans to focus on electrified powertrains and SUVs in the coming years, the company's head of North American operations told fleet managers on Sept. 15.
