If you need to cover the approximately 15 miles from Buckingham Palace to Heathrow Airport and back, Land Rover's 2019 Range Rover HSE P400e might just help you save fuel. With some careful throttle input, you could likely complete the route without using much gasoline, as Range Rover's new plug-in hybrid flagship SUV promises 31 miles of electric driving.

You'll certainly feel like a royal while riding in the Range Rover P400e. The vehicle doesn't lose anything in the way of interior appointments from its diesel or gasoline V-6 or V-8 brethren. And this new model will enhance your eco-driving self-image.

Plug-in Powertrain

The plug-in hybrid, which is only available with the HSE trim, pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four gasoline engine paired with a 114-hp electric motor that's fed from a 13.1-kilowatt-per-hour lithium-ion battery pack. The vehicle still offers a diesel (Td6), as well as gasoline V-6 and V-8 engines each with two power ratings.

Even if you're not chauffering around English royalty, the PHEV offers the promise that much of your shorter to medium commute can be handled on electric power.

An eight-speed automatic transmission ably manages power delivery, and the vehicle's electric steering is more precise than the smaller Range Rover Sport, which also now offers a plug-in hybrid option.

The plug-in Range Rover should appeal to more eco-minded buyers, rather than those who are looking for performance, because it's nearly the same price as the V-8 model. It starts at $95,950. Our test vehicle would retail for $108,945 equipped with a few options such as high-beam assist, and a driver-assistance technology package.

Kudos to Land Rover for keeping a high bar with its interior appointments. The vehicle offers a level of comfort and luxury that should appeal to even choosy buyers.
