Connecticut Governor Calls for Fleet Greening

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont has signed an executive order calling on the state to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from state vehicles and facilities and establishing representatives from participating state agencies to ensure these goals are met.

The executive order aims to reduce GHG emissions to a 45% reduction below 2001 levels by 2030. A new Steering Committee on State Sustainability will be established to determine agency-specific targets for meeting these goals by reducing GHG emissions from onsite heating and cooling, energy use, and the state vehicle fleet.

The Connecticut Department of Administrative Services (DAS), Fleet Operations leases more than 3,500 vehicles to support more than 85 state agencies, according to the agency website.

“As the agency responsible for managing state facilities, fleets, and procurement policies for most of the executive branch, DAS is point to accelerate the adoption of renewables, low-carbon heating/cooling, and electric vehicles across our portfolio,” said DAS Commissioner Josh Geballe in a statement. “We, and other agencies that have already taken efforts to make their buildings and fleets more efficient, have seen the environmental benefits — and the cost savings.”

This is Lamont’s first executive order since taking office as governor earlier this year.
