Volkswagen and Intel-owned Mobileye are joining forces to launch an autonomous electric vehicle ride-hailing service in Israel, where Mobileye is located, Intel announced.

The partnership, named "New Mobility," will deploy Volkswagen EVs with Mobileye's level 4 autonomous driving system in early 2019. The companies plan on scaling the project to a commercial venture by 2022.

Mobileye previously helped Tesla develop its autopilot technology before being bought by Intel in 2017 for $15.3 billion. Intel then began testing autonomous vehicles in Jerusalem earlier this year.

The fleet will be managed by Israeli VW distributor Champion Motors.
