Hyundai's Nexo Fuel Cell SUV to Launch This Year

Hyundai’s Nexo fuel cell SUV will offer a maximum driving range of 380 miles and will be available in California before the end of 2018.

The Nexo will be available in a Blue model with an estimated driving range of 380 miles, and the Limited trim will offer a range of 354 miles, according to a release from Hyundai. The Blue model will offer an estimated equivalent of 65 miles per gallon in the city, 58 mpge on the highway, and 61 mpge combined, while the Limited models offer 59 mpge in the city, 54 mpge on the highway, and 57 mpge combined.

The Nexo offers 161 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque, and can be refueled in a roughly five minutes, according to Hyundai.

It offers a suite of safety features, including forward collision-avoidance assist, lane following assist, driver attention warning, high beam assist, and remote smart parking assist. Also available is blind-spot view monitor, which shows drivers on a center cluster screen the rear and side views of Nexo using cameras while changing lanes in either direction.

The Nexo is capable of starting after being subject to overnight temperatures of minus-20 degrees Fahrenheit, and has a cooling performance on steep grades with temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Other Available features include a sunroof, electric parking brake, smart power tailgate, Qi wireless smartphone charging pad, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, text-to-speech capabilities via Bluetooth, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen.

Nexo will replace Hyundai's hydrogen-powered Tucson that has been available in California with a retail lease. The Nexo accelerates 25% faster than the Tucson FCEV, has 40% more range, more cabin space, a lighter weight, and improved hydrogen storage tanks. Hyundai first showed the Nexo in January at CES in Las Vegas.
