Toyota is recalling 671 2016-model year Avalon Hybrid and Camry Hybrid sedans so dealers can address a potential problem involving the front drive shaft assembly, the automaker said.

Among the recalled vehicles, up to 42 could have a misassembled front drive shaft, Toyota said. The problem might cause vehicle vibration, with certain components in the drive shaft assembly at risk for separating. As a result, the vehicle might lose propulsion while driving, and the transmission might not hold the vehicle when shifted into the park position.

“A loss of propulsion while driving at higher speeds could increase the risk of a crash,” Toyota warned in a released statement about the recall. “Additionally, if the driver exits the vehicle without applying the parking brake, the vehicle could roll away with the transmission in Park, increasing the risk of a crash.”

For all of the recalled vehicles, Toyota dealers will check the serial numbers of both front drive shafts. If necessary, they will be replaced with new ones at no cost to the customer. Mail notifications of the recall will be sent beginning in early August, Toyota said.

Vehicle owners can reach Toyota customer service at (800) 331-4331.
