The U.S. Department of Energy will begin testing Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell compact SUVs in four additional areas of the country as it expands on a fuel-cell vehicle testing initiative that has been limited to Southern California.

Members of the federal agency will test Hyundai's fuel cell SUV in Northern California, Washington D.C., Michigan, and Denver starting this month. Testing will run through 2017, according to an announcement by Hyundai.

During testing, the vehicles will use a hydrogen fueling station developed by the federal agency.

The agency has been testing fuel-cell Tucsons since 2013 using fueling infrastructure that only existed in Southern California.
