The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) will begin collaborating to accelerate research, demonstration, and deployment of alternative fuel technologies and innovative transportation systems.

DOE will support DOT's Smart City Challenge that aims to select one U.S. city to be awarded for demonstrating and deploying vision-forward smart city and mobility solutions. The city would receive $40 million from the Federal Highway Administration and $10 million from the department's private sector partner, Vulcan Inc.

The collaboration was formalized by way of a memorandum of understanding, which facilitates actions to leverage the two agencies' expertise within the joint initiative.
