Verizon's fleet manager has ordered eight VIA Motors' battery-electric hybrid vans for his telecommunications fleet, he said.

Verizon plans to test eight V-TRUX vans in California, New Jersey, New York, and Washington, D.C. Kenneth Jack, Verizon's vice president of fleet operations, said he's eager to add additional vans to his fleet.

VIA Motors is now waiting for approval from the California Air Resources Board before it can ramp up production of the vans, which are modified Chevrolet Express cargo vans.

The VIA vans can operate in all-electric mode for 40 miles using advanced lithium ion batteries. An onboard electric generator provides power to the gasoline engine, giving the vans a full range of about 300 miles.
