BMW will introduce a new generation of four-cylinder diesel engines for its 5 Series mid-size sedan this summer, the automaker has announced.

The 2.0L engines, which will include the automaker's twinpower turbo technology, will initially arrive on the 518d, 520d, and 520d xDrive sedan and touring models.

The diesel powerplants will feature an aluminium crankcase with thermally joined liners to better optimize internal friction coefficients; integrated balance shafts; a map-controlled oil pump; a highly efficient turbocharging system with variable intake geometry; and Common Rail direct injection with solenoid injectors.

The diesel engines are based on BMW's new modular engine system and will be equipped with auto start-stop. The vehicles will be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
