Allegheny County, Pa., has purchased two compressed natural gas (CNG) Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD pickup trucks. The County unveiled them on April 22, Earth Day, at a press conference. The vehicles are four-wheel-drive extended cab models with 6.0L Vortec V-8 engines that have hardened valve and seals an a CNG system from a conversion company. The County intends to fuel the new pickup trucks at two area CNG stations.

With regard to the County’s overall fleet sustainability efforts, it has a goal of reducing its fleet’s greenhouse gas emissions by 5% per year between 2010 and 2014. The municipality intends to achieve this by replacing older vehicles and pieces of equipment with more efficient models.
