PALO ALTO, CATesla Motors plans to unveil its Model X electric vehicle, which is built on the Model S platform but features SUV design elements, on Feb. 9 at the company’s design studio in Hawthorne, Calif., according to a Mercury News report

The electric vehicle manufacturer, headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif., has invited media representatives to the event. During a conference call with investors, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk called Model X “pretty revolutionary for the SUV segment.”

However, the company has thus far been tight-lipped about the vehicle’s pricing and other details.

Meanwhile, Tesla is busy readying the summer release of its Model S electric vehicle, also designed and built in California. Tesla expects to produce 5,000 units of the Model S this year. The vehicle will be available with three lithium-ion battery options, denoted by the kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy they store: 40 kWh, 60 kWh and 85 kWh. If the Model S is traveling at 55 mph, the car’s kWh figures roughly translate to the range capabilities of 160, 230 and 300 miles, respectively.

The base price of the Model S with the 40 kWh battery is $49,000 after factoring in the U.S. federal tax credit.
