LOS ANGELES – During the Los Angeles Auto Show, BMW showcased the fully electric BMW i3 concept. Due for release in 2013, the electric car can seat four and travel an estimated 80 to 100 miles on a single charge.
The electric motor of the BMW i3 is designed primarily for operation in an urban environment. During the vehicle's design, BMW took advantage of the research conducted during Mini E field trials in the U.S.
The BMW i3 (known as the Megacity earlier in its evolution) will also offer an optional range extender, the REx.
