LOS ANGELES – Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD last week opened its North American headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reported.

During the grand-opening festivities, the company displayed its eBUS-12 electric-powered shuttle bus that Hertz will use to transport its customers from Los Angeles International Airport to the Hertz rental car facility.

The BYD e6, which the company showcased during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is expected to hit the U.S. market next year. It is an all-electric, five-seat crossover that the company says can travel as much as 186 miles on a single charge in urban conditions. The car is equipped with a 75kW motor and the BYD-developed Fe battery. Projected top speed is 87 mph.
