WOLFSBURG, GERMANY - Volkswagen AG plans to manufacture and sell 10,000 electric cars in China from 2014 to 2018, Bloomberg reported this week.

The automaker expects to make an electric model as part of local ventures with SAIC Motor Corp. and FAW Group Corp. as soon as 2013. In addition, Volkswagen is considering a battery-powered car specifically designed for China in 2018, Karl-Thomas Neumann, president of Volkswagen Group China, told attendees at an electric vehicle conference in Shenzhen, China, on Nov. 7.

China is offering buyers of plug-in hybrids and pure-electric cars subsidies of as much as 60,000 yuan ($9,000) in a national effort to cut pollution and reduce oil dependency.
