HENDERSONVILLE, NC - Construction of a new compressed natural gas fuel station began June 15 at the Henderson County maintenance facility in Hendersonville, N.C., the Asheville Citizen-Times reported.

When completed, this will be the first CNG station in Henderson County. The city of Asheville operates a CNG station, however, and there is a public CNG station in Arden.

Henderson County was awarded a $610,500 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant last year that will fund the station's construction. The county has also received an additional $585,841 for the purchase of new CNG transit buses. County officials also hope to attract additional grants in the future to help replace more county vehicles with CNG-fueled vehicles over the next several years.

Delivery of the CNG-fueled transit buses is expected in 2011.
