WASHINGTON - Officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Navy have signed a memorandum of understanding intended to increase the use of biofuels and alternative energy in the military.

Among its goals, the Navy plans to cut petroleum use in its nontactical commercial fleet of 50,000 in half by 2015 by phasing in hybrid, flex-fuel, and electric vehicles.

By 2020, the Navy expects half of its total energy consumption for ships, aircraft, tanks, vehicles, and shore installations will come from alternative sources.
