FORT MYERS, Fla. --- Lee County officials are considering a plan to convert vegetable oil waste from local restaurants into biodiesel that can fuel the county's waste-management vehicles.

The plan, spearheaded by County Commissioner Ray Judah, would involve building a conversion facility at the Gulf Coast Landfill. HDR Engineering in Tampa is preparing a design and economic benefit report, according to the News Press. If approved by the commission, the biodiesel facility could be completed by the end of this year.

However, the project has drawn considerable opposition and its fate is unclear. Critics question the project's economic benefit. Outspoken critics include Commissioner Frank Mann and Ft. Myers City Councilman Thomas Leonardo.
