Retail sales of Class 8, natural gas-powered trucks were flat through August year-to-date in the U.S. and Canada, according to ACT Research.

Despite the flat market, sales were seen as a positive sign for natural gas vehicle sales, which could have been down with uncertainty surrounding the future of environmental regulations and continuing low oil prices.

Refuse fleets were the most dominant market for natural gas Class 8 trucks this year, followed by transit, school bus operators and then over-the-road applications.

“The future of alternative fuels led by NG/RNG is positive,” said Ken Vieth, senior partner/GM at ACT Research. “The challenges of alternative fuel availability and distribution will be overcome; time is the biggest unknown.”

ACT Research will be offering a free Fuels Perspective Webinar on Oct. 31, 2017 at 2 p.m. EDT. Presenters from Diesel Technology Forum, Clean Energy, and Motiv Power Systems will offer their expertise and insider’s perspective on key focal points applicable to their respective fuels.
