Musk Teases Solar Roof

August 11, 2016

Tesla Motors' CEO Elon Musk hopes SolarCity could release a “solar roof” for homes that would be a separate entity from the solar modules that the company already provides and could eventually help power electric vehicles, according to CNN.

"It's a solar roof as opposed to a module on a roof," said Musk, who is also chairman of SolarCity. "It's not a thing on the roof, it is the roof."

Musk proposed during a SolarCity’s earnings call on Tuesday that the solar roof would be directed more toward owners that are looking to completely replace their roofs.

"If your roof is nearing end-of-life, well, you've got to get a new roof anyway," said Musk. "And so, why not have a solar roof that's better in many others ways as well?"

Earlier this month, Tesla and SolarCity entered into an agreement for the automaker to acquire SolarCity for $2.6 billion in an all-stock transaction, according to a press release the companies sent out.
