Hyundai is planning to manufacture a new hydrogen fuel cell utility vehicle with a 500-mile range, according to a report by Autocar.

The company "will launch a dedicated vehicle, although it is not clear what vehicle type it will be based around," said Sae-Hoon Kim, Hyundai-Kia’s head of hydrogen fuel cell research.

This year, both Toyota and Hyundai released mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Hyundai’s Tucson Fuel Cell was based on the ix35 SUV, a prior design.

"Developing a bespoke car offers clear advantages," Kim said. "For instance, the larger the radiators on a fuel cell car the better, and you can see on the Mirai that they have developed a cooling solution that helps with that scenario."
