Toyota has promised the "next era of an icon" when it reveals its next generation 2016 Prius gasoline-electric hybrid later today at a media event in Las Vegas.

Toyota, which will begin live-streaming the reveal starting at 9 p.m., has said the 2016 Prius will offer "a striking new look, enhanced driving dynamics, and impressive fuel economy."

Let's look at what we know so far about the new model.

Toyota has released a teaser image of the car that's essentially a red squiggle (tail light?) in the dark. Several leaked photos have given a glimpse of the car, including one showing silver and dark gray Priuses in a cargo plane posted to the Facebook page of Prius Club Malaysia. An earlier photo posted by Yahoo Autos showed a red Prius during a photo shoot.

Various reports have indicated that the 2016 Prius will be based on the Toyota New Generation Architecture (TGNA) that could support an all-wheel drive model. Toyota also may offer a plug-in Prius that could provide a longer range by using a lithium-ion battery pack. So far, the Prius has relied only on a nickel-metal-hydride battery.
