BMW delivered its initial i8 luxury sports cars to customers in Munich, Germany, this week during the roll-out of the plug-in hybrid.

The automaker hosted a special event on June 5 attended by German celebrities, such as TV presenter Thomas Gottschalk and actor Thomas Kretschmann.

The i8, which pairs a three-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery, offers a unique combination of performance and fuel efficiency. When operating in zero-emmission fully electric mode, the BMW i8 has a top speed of 75 mph and a range of 23 miles.

The i8 can reach 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds. In everyday driving with a fully-charged battery, the i8's fuel economy should come in around 46.6 mpg (56 mpg Imperial), according to BMW.
