The City of Springfield, Ill., has converted a total of 24 patrol cars and pickup trucks to propane autogas, according to CleanFuel USA. The City began operating them on area roads in mid-May, 2013.

According to the City’s Director of Budget and Management, the City will save more than $82,000 in fuel costs during the first year of operating these vehicles. The project was partially funded by a grant from the U.S. Energy Department’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and Texas State Technical College served as the lead grantee of the funds. The City worked with CleanFuel USA to convert the vehicles.

McCarty said the City may purchase additional vehicles fueled by propane autogas due to the savings the City has realized from the initial 24 units.

The City also installed an on-site fueling station with a CleanFuel USA CFT Pro 2100 autogas dispenser. This station will fuel vehicles used by the City’s public works department.
