In his final State of the City address, New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg highlighted a plan to increase the number of electric vehicles operating in the City’s fleet. He said he wants to add 50 more EVs to the City’s fleet of cars, and place six electric taxis in service, toward a goal of making one-third of the City’s fleet consist of EVs by 2020.

Related to the goal of expanding the City’s fleet of EVs, Bloomberg said he wants to work with the City Council to change the building code so 20 percent of all new public parking spaces in private development will be wired so they can charge EVs. He also wants the City to pilot curbside charging stations that will allow drivers to charge a vehicle’s battery in as few as 30 minutes.

In 2011, the City added 70 EVs to its fleet.
