Delphi showcased the inverter at eCarTech, held Oct. 18-20 at the New Munich Trade Fair Center.

Inverters manage power for hybrid and electric vehicle propulsion. Part of the electrified powertrain, the module converts DC energy stored in a high-voltage vehicle battery pack into AC voltage necessary to drive the vehicle's electric motor. The Delphi power inverter is suitable for both traction electric motors and generators. Its most distinctive feature is an encapsulated power semiconductor device.

The technology, Delphi said, offers superior heat dissipation capability when compared to standard power semiconductor modules. It also features power density that’s twice as high as standard modules and eliminates the need for wire bonds, which can be susceptible to breaking.

The new power inverter is expected to be in volume production in 2013.
