BARRIE, ONTARIO, CANADA - Eight new electric vehicle charging stations have been installed in southern Ontario as part of a provincial government project, Simcoe.com reported.

The stations are part of a $1 million demonstration project overseen by Ontario and Better Place, an EV services provider.

PowerStream and Veridian Connections -- Ontario's largest municipally owned electric utilities -- will use the stations in Toronto, Markham, Vaughan, Bowmanville, Ajax and Barrie.

Ontario is also investing in smart grid infrastructure aimed at stimulating sales and use of electric vehicles. The province's goal is to have at least one of every 20 vehicles in Ontario electrically powered by 2020.
