HARRISON, NY - Police in Harrison, N.Y., told reporters on Monday, March 22, that driver error -- not unintended acceleration -- was apparently behind a March 9 crash of a Toyota Prius in the area, Reuters reported.
On March 9, a woman driving a 2005 Prius forward out of a driveway in Harrison suffered injuries after the car sped across a busy street and hit a stone wall. The incident attracted media attention because of speculation that sudden, unintended acceleration had caused the crash.
During Monday's press conference, Capt. Anthony Marraccini noted that the vehicle accelerator in the Prius was depressed 100 percent at the time of the collision and that there was no indication of any brake application. Marraccini is acting chief of the Harrison Police Department.
The Harrison Police Department's conclusions are consistent with the preliminary finding of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Toyota cooperated fully in the investigation, Marraccini said.
