WASHINGTON - Chrysler Group Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) is recalling 142 2009 neighborhood electric vehicles because of a parking brake problem.

The parking brake cable may have been improperly crimped, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As a result, the parking brake cable may separate from the actuator handle while applied. This creates the risk of the vehicle rolling away on a hill, increasing the likelihood of crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the parking brake lever assembly free of charge. The safety recall involves MY 2009 GEM e2, e4, e6, eL, eL XD and eS models.

Vehicle owners can reach GEM at (866) 764-0616.
