LOS ANGELES --- General Motors is busy building buzz for its Chevrolet Volt electric car in Los Angeles this week, as the LA Auto Show gets underway.

On Wednesday, Dec. 2, GM is expected to announce the first round of Volt retail markets during the show's media day. The LA Auto Show will be open to the public Dec. 4-13.

On Monday of this week, GM engineers met with local school children to talk about electricity. During the visit, they mentioned that California would be one of the early markets for Volt cars once production begins in late 2010, the Detroit Free Press reported.

In addition, the Volt was displayed at the Westfield Century City Mall in Los Angeles last Friday. Meanwhile, a giant Volt banner hangs from the Los Angeles Convention Center in clear view of commuters on the freeway. Local journalists have been given the opportunity to test-drive the car.

A review in Monday's Los Angeles Times, written by auto critic Dan Neil, noted that the Volt "could provide a bridgehead for GM in California."
