STOCKTON, CA --- Electric Vehicles International (EVI) has moved its U.S. production operations from Austin, Texas, to Stockton, Calif.

On Nov. 4, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other politicians made appearances as EVI unveiled its new U.S. production facility in Stockton, the Los Angeles Times reported.  Partnering with Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp., EVI plans to convert medium-duty delivery trucks to all-electric operation. The company hopes to deliver 1,000 converted trucks by the end of 2010.

"As the world's leading location for adopting green technology and promoting sustainable transportation, California is where our customers are and where we need to be," said EVI-USA Chief Executive Ricky Hanna.

The converted trucks cost between $120,000 and $180,000, depending largely on the size of the lithium-ion battery pack ordered. The company plans to target the plug-in hybrid business as well and is exploring the possibility of offering electric conversions of school buses and port equipment.

EVI's portfolio ranges from two-person light-duty vehicles to medium-duty Class 6 vehicles. They can be configured to meet specific transportation needs. The vehicles use the Valence Lithium Phosphate battery system.
