NEW YORK - Warren County Sheriff's department is the latest New York police department to consider retrofitting its gasoline-powered vehicles to propane, according to The Post-Star.
Warren County plans to join Washington County Sheriff's Office, which has already been approved to move forward with the grant process, to apply for a federal grant that would convert their car fleet to use the less expensive and more environmentally friendly fuel. Glen Falls Police Department may also convert.
Washington County Sheriff Roger Leclaire expects to save $71,000 annually if the grant is approved, pointing out savings on maintenance costs such as extending oil change intervals from 3,000 miles to 8,000 miles since it "burns a lot cleaner than gas." Retrofitting Washington County's 21-vehicle fleet with propane tanks would cost about $121,800, Leclaire said.
The money to convert vehicles to propane would come from the federal government, but is administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, reported the Star.
