DALLAS --- T. Boone Pickens, the former oilman and current board member of Clean Energy Fuels Corp., appeared with Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert outside of City Hall on Aug. 24 to promote a plan to switch the city's taxicab fleet from gasoline to compressed natural gas.

Joined by several City Council members, Pickens and Leppert showcased a prototype cab that's expected to run 250 miles on a single tank of CNG, the Dallas News reported.

Leppert also used the press event to try to drum up support for another plan that would set new rules permitting "green" cabs to jump to the front of the cab line at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field.

"Anytime we can use alternative fuels like natural gas, it's a positive," Leppert said.

Pickens and Leppert used the occasion to check out the prototype cab from Vehicle Production Group. The cab looks like an SUV and is slated to go into production in 2010. The cab is expected to carry a $38,000 price tag.
