AUSTIN, TX - With a projected budget shortfall of $22 million, Austin Independent School District (AISD) is being criticized for allowing 38 employees to have district-provided vehicles, according to CBS42.

While the district said supervisors can't do their job without take-home trucks, in 2008 alone AISD spent more than $48,000 on fuel for take-home vehicles - not including maintenance and tire expenses, reported CBS.

AISD Facilities Director Paul Turner said take-home trucks outweigh the cost of maintaining them because workers can respond to emergencies faster.

In addition to the trucks, one district van is used by an employee who only lives three miles from work.

School leaders are currently looking over a study outlining many ways the district can save $100 million.

Cutting take-home vehicles is reportedly not on the list, reported CBS.
