SMITHTOWN, NY --- The New York towns of Smithtown and Huntington have entered a new partnership to buy compressed natural gas at a future Kings Park service station, allowing them to expand their CNG vehicle fleets, Newsday reported.

The agreement with Huntington, which contracts out two-thirds of its trash pickup, will now specify CNG vehicles in its new bids. The town plans to convert some of its own garbage trucks as well, Newsday reported.

Smithtown was the first municipality on Long Island to switch over to an all-CNG garbage truck fleet. Smithtown has been under contract with the company that supplies the CNG, California-based Clean Energy, for three years, with fixed prices at the company's Hauppauge facility, Newsday reported.

"Our goal is to get all of our vehicles to be environmentally friendly," Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio said. The town has four snowplows, seven cars and a street sweeper that run on CNG.
