MUNICH, GERMANY – Engineers have been working on an all-electric version of the Mini at the BMW plant in Cowley, according to The Oxford Times. The first 500 electric cars will be built without engines and gearboxes in Oxford before being shipped to Germany to be fitted with an electric power pack — and then leased to selective customers in California.

The plan to build electric cars is understood to part of the Project i, a special division of BMW, dedicated to building low emission city cars.
