June 28, 2011

NEW YORK – Mercedes-Benz has decided to accelerate plans for volume production of its fuel-cell car, moving the target from 2015 to 2014, according to a report from Edmunds Inside Line.

Mercedes-Benz has tested its fuel-cell technology with its B-Class Fuel Cell car.
Mercedes-Benz has tested its fuel-cell technology with its B-Class Fuel Cell car.

Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Daimler chairman and head of Mercedes-Benz, made the revelation during a media roundtable discussion on June 21. In explaining the strategy shift, Zetsche cited the success of this year’s “F-Cell World Drive,” in which three Mercedes-Benz B-Class Fuel Cell cars proved their durability by traveling across four continents – through 14 countries -- in a span of 125 days without any relevant problems.

The upcoming production version of the automaker’s fuel-cell car will have a range of about 250 miles, Zetsche said. Pricing isn’t yet established.
