Honda plans to relaunch its Insight gasoline-electric hybrid as a 2019 model powered by the company's new two-motor hybrid system as a larger five-passenger sedan, Honda announced.

Honda will show an Insight prototype at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 15 as a precursor to production of the vehicle. The 2019 Insight is expected to go on sale next summer.

In terms of length, the 2019 Insight will slot in just above the Civic in Honda's passenger car lineup. Honda introduced the first-generation Insight in 1999 as the first gasoline-electric hybrid sold in the U.S. The two-door car had a highway fuel economy rating of 70 mpg.

Honda will build the 2019 Insight at its Greensburg, Indiana plant, alongside Civic and CR-V. It will join a growing list of alternative-power Honda vehicles, including the Clarity Fuel Cell, Clarity Electric, Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, and 2018 Accord Hybrid.
