Volvo Cars is leaning toward expanding its lineup with several smaller models that it would build on the new Compact Modular Architecture that's essentially a smaller version of the Scalable Product Architecture platform.

In the near future, Volvo will build its entire lineup on these two platforms that will support its plans to add electrified powertrains for plug-in hybrids and a battery-electric vehicle by 2019.

Volvo plans to launch CMA on a future vehicle in 2017, including a plug-in hybrid with Volvo's Twin Engine technology. Like SPA, CMA can share infotainment, safety systems, and other technology.

Volvo has added the SPA platform to its 2016 XC90 and next-generation S90 sedan, as well as the next 60-series vehicles.
