NEW YORK - A fleet of new, alternative-fuel patrol cars hit New York City on August 18. The New York Police Department outfitted 30 Ford Fusion hybrids as patrol cars, raising the department's number of alternative-fuel police vehicles to more than 400, according to the New York Post.

At 41 mpg, the Fusions are expected to get more than double the gas mileage of the City's conventional patrol cars, mostly Chevy Impalas.

The cars join the hybrid Nissan Altima sedans already in use, plus other hybrid vehicles used for parking enforcement, reported the New York Post.
