El Paso City Purchasing Hybrid Vehicles

June 10, 2010

EL PASO, TEXAS - The City of El Paso will replace its older fleet vehicles with 20 new hybrid models, according to the El Paso Times.

The City Council on June 8 approved the purchase of up to 20 Ford Escape Hybrid SUVs over the next two years for a maximum of $570,000, reported the Times.

The purchase of the hybrid, smaller-engine sport utility vehicles is part of a broader effort to move city workers into smaller, more-efficient vehicles, said Stuart Ead, the city's director of general services.

The Escapes will replace Ford Explorers used by the street, engineering, police, and parks departments.

The Explorers being retired will be sold at auction, according to the Times.
