WINTER HAVEN, FL – On the outside, it looks like a regular vehicle, but underneath the hood the city’s new 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid is a going-green environmental machine.

City officials have begun the process of replacing some of the city’s fleet with hybrids. The $26,160 “green machine” was purchased for the Community Development Department but the city’s courier, Tracy Hamric, is using it because her city-owned Blazer is being repaired, according to www.theledger.com.

The hybrid uses a combination of an electric motor and a gasoline engine to operate. Developing “green” initiatives has become one of the city’s top priorities. City officials have in the past few years made small changes to move in that direction.
