REDFORD, MI - Detroit Diesel announced new initiatives to support its commitment to the environment by becoming an ENERGY STAR partner. Detroit Diesel, through its voluntary participation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), will work to improve energy efficiency and fight global warming.

In partnership with ENERGY STAR, Detroit Diesel will:

  • Measure and track the energy performance of its facilities where possible by using tools offered through ENERGY  STAR.
  • Develop and implement a plan consistent with the ENERGY STAR Energy Management Guidelines to achieve energy savings.
  • Support the ENERGY STAR Challenge, a national call-to-action to help improve the energy efficiency of America's commercial and industrial buildings by 10 percent or more.

Due in part to its support of ENERGY STAR and other conservation efforts, Detroit Diesel has also developed the Redford Conserves energy program. The new initiative is a network of site-level associates, company representatives and Detroit Diesel business partners who together will work with their teams to increase awareness, implement conservation initiatives and monitor on-going improvements.

"We are continually looking to enhance our environmental efforts, and the ENERGY STAR program is one of the many important steps we are taking to conserve energy and reduce consumption," said Ken Saari, director of Core Facilities for Detroit Diesel. "The Redford Conserves energy program is a good example of how we can work together to make a difference."

Detroit Diesel recently invested $275 million to refurbish and retool its engine plant in Redford, Mich. The updated plant includes energy-efficient, green options such as high-efficiency fluorescent lighting; programmable light controllers; upgraded roof installation; new boiler controls, and an Energy Optimization System to control
building systems.

"Environmental responsibility is everyone's responsibility, and I'm pleased Detroit Diesel is taking this motto to heart," said EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson. "By making smart energy choices, Detroit Diesel is helping improve our nation's energy and environmental outlook."
