Mercedes-Benz has reduced the price of the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive by $1,200 to $24,550 for a battery EV that increases range and decreases charging time as it enters its fourth generation.

The coupe will be offered as the base model, while the cabriolet will start at $28,750. The prices don't include available federal or state incentives.

The Smart Fortwo Electric Drive is powered by an 81-hp electric motor that produces 118 lb.-ft. of torque and a maximum speed of 81 mph. Range has been increased 18% to about 80 miles.

The vehicle uses a new 7-kilowatt charger, which reduces charging time to 2.5 hours on a 240-volt (Level 2) charger, which is half as long as the outgoing model.
