Green Commuter, a carsharing and ride-sharing startup in California, has launched an all-electric carsharing service in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The electric carsharing service has started with 20 Nissan Leafs placed in parking facilities at 20 new charging stations throughout Chattanooga. Powered by Rent Centric’s self-service technology, the vehicles are available for hourly rent to members via the Green Commuter mobile app.

The Chattanooga branch combines its zero-emission vehicles with Rent Centric’s mobile app to enable drivers — with a clean driving record — to rent vehicles for as little as $7 an hour. The Green Commuter app allows renters to locate a nearby Leaf, unlock the vehicle, start the engine, and go, according to the company.

One of the main benefits of the Green Commuter all-electric carsharing service is that it will, “help reduce air pollution, traffic congestion, and offer a safe, environmentally friendly alternative to owning a car,” said Lisa Maragnano, executive director at CARTA during the grand-opening ceremony.

Maragnano also added that by installing the new charging stations along major transportation routes that, “people will think twice about owning a car and lean more toward utilizing public transportation and carsharing.”

“We are honored to provide our on-demand rental management automation and carsharing technology to power Green Commuter Chattanooga as they provide their citizens with a cleaner, smarter, and more efficient transportation alternative to vehicle ownership,” said Alex Aryafar , Rent Centric’s chief technology officer. “We strongly believe that the continued advancement of automotive mobility solutions like carsharing and p2p car rental will be of great benefit to our clients and their businesses.”
