The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized Penske Truck Leasing and Sonoma County Fleet Operations as two of the seven winners of its Clean Air Excellence Award.

Penske Truck Leasing won a Clean Air Excellence Award in the Clean Air Technology category for its work in spec'ing, operating, and maintaining fleets of alternative-fuel vehicles that include natural gas, propane, electric, and diesel-electric hybrids. Penske is also an affiliate partner in the EPA's SmartWay program, which helps the freight transportation sector improve supply chain efficiency and reduce transportation-related emissions, according to the EPA.

In addition, Sonoma County Fleet Operations won a Clean Air Excellence Award in the Transportation Efficiency Innovations category for its Fleet Hybrid Electric and All Electric Vehicle Program, which has reduced the California county's fleet-related greenhouse gas emissions by over 1,815 tons over the past decade, the EPA said.

The Clean Air Excellence Awards honor projects from across the United States for their work on clean air and climate initiatives, according to the EPA. The awards recognize innovative state, local, tribal, and private sector programs that protect health and the environment, educate the public, serve their communities, and boost the economy.
