Smith Electric Vehicles Corp., the leading global producer of all-electric, medium-duty commercial vehicles, announced that it has now produced over 700 all-electric Edison and Newton trucks, which have cumulatively driven over five million miles on the road.

CEOs and CFOs of short-haul fleets are driving the demand for electric fleet transformation. These vehicles typically travel on fixed routes of fewer than 100 miles in a single day, and are based in a centralized depot, making them ideal for conversion, Smith Electric said.

Customers who work with Smith Electric to transform their fleets save an estimated 70 percent annually on fuel and maintenance and eliminate all vehicle-based emissions, Smith Electric said. The five million miles traveled by Smith Electric vehicles have resulted in significant environmental benefits, including offsetting an estimated 700,000 gallons of fuel and eliminating more than 10,000 short tons of greenhouse gases.

There are six million medium-duty commercial vehicles, representing a $40 billion market across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Smith Electric is targeting short-haul service vehicles with routes in urban centers for fleet electrification.
